Family Friendly walk that suits all ages and abilities
The Canyon Walk is one of Bright’s most popular family-friendly trails, offering scenic riverside views and a glimpse into the region’s gold-mining past. Suitable for all ages and most fitness levels, it follows a formed track with a few short climbs, steps, and obstacles along the way.
Choose Your Route
Begin at Howitt Park and follow the path toward the Star Road Bridge. On the northern bank of the Ovens River you’ll find a picturesque route with some steep steps, while the southern bank section from Howitt Park to Canyon Lane is fully sealed and wheelchair accessible (Grade 1). For a longer loop, continue past both suspension bridges to the railway bridge and return via the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail.
Short Loops & Accessible Options
Cross either of the two suspension bridges to create a shorter loop — perfect for prams and an easy stroll. Along the way, interpretive signs share stories of the area’s rich gold mining heritage. The track winds past a narrow canyon carved by the Ovens River and historic water races built by early miners. In spring, look out for bursts of wildflowers and a variety of native birdlife.
